DNA = deoxyribonucleic acid

RNA = ribonucleic acid

Nucleotides = monomers of all nucleic acids; formed by joining:

  1. phosphate group [aways the same]
  2. 5-carbon sugar molecule [deoxyribose in DNA; ribose in RNA]
  3. organic nitrogenous base [adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine; uracil (in RNA) [A Tiger Called Gerald.. and then something for uracil]

Joining together by condensation gives long chain of nucleotides; forms sugar-phosphate “backbone”; chains of nucleotides = nucleic acids

OTPs - adenine x thymine, guanine x cytosine, adenine x uracil [in RNA]

Purines —> adenine, guanine

Pyramidines —> thymine, cytosine, uracil [I know uracil doesn’t have a y, just try not to forget that uracil is also a pyramidine]

Too much nucleic acid —> gout: uric acid produced when excess purines [adenine and guanine] are broken down in liver, excreted in urine; uric acid is insoluble at low tempertures, forms crystals which are deposited in joins [e.g. at toes]
